Why I'll Never Buy Large Memory IPod's Again

By

Since I got my first iPod way back when I’ve gone through four or five of them. At first I had a two gig nano, but that wasn’t satisfactory to my needs. Two gigs seemed like a lot, but I already had too much music to fit into that one little machine. It eventually died on me, and I went through bigger and bigger iPods, from forty to eighty until I finally reached 120 gigs of memory.  They all served their purpose well, that is until they all broke down. Over time I realized something important: It was absolutely useless to own an iPod with that much memory.

Currently I have 88.21 gigs of music. That’s over 33 days of music. I love music and have spent a large part of the money I get on acquiring new music for my library. But am I ever going to need to recall all of that music at any time? No. I have no plans to become a DJ, as I doubt nobody would want to have a DJ that specializes in heavy metal. So why did I spend hundreds of dollars on these iPods with massive memory? Part of it was for other people. If I’m riding in the car with somebody, I wanted to be able to play something they would enjoy, rather than blasting them with the hardcore metal I usually listen to. But other than that would I really need all my Stratovarius albums all at once? Heck, I don’t think I need a single Stratovarius album over any of the other ones. What about my live Scorpions album? I enjoy it, but when’s the last time I felt the overwhelming urge to rock that above all others? Does anyone else know any Scorpion songs besides “Rock You Like a Hurricane” anymore? So when my last iPod broke, I made a critical decision.  And no, it wasn’t to buy a Zune. Zune’s seem to be the superior music player, but, quite frankly, I’m cheap and they are way out of my price range, despite several friends swearing up and down that they are more reliable and easier to format music for. I went with a 2 gig shuffle instead. It currently has 238 songs on it, and that seems like the perfect number. With my old iPods I would just listen to a playlist of around 300 songs on random anyway. And it only cost 49 dollars. That’s a deal I won’t regret doing if this iPod breaks in a year. But here’s to hoping it lasts. Judging by how much I spent on it, it’ll probably outlast me, as these things go.

It's amazing how Apple manages to stuck 160GB into a machine that small. It is equally amazing how many of us don't actually use up all the spaces. I struggle to justify that the value of any mp3/mp4 players that go above 16GB. I am sure at times, you would just want to repeat a single song over and over again, wouldn't you?
